Renee Madden is a member of the firm’s Estate Planning and Probate practice. She has a particular interest in tax planning, but is also passionate in her belief that everyone, despite their present level of wealth, should have a Last Will and Testament so individuals can make the uniquely personal decisions of who will administer his or her estate and who will be given the property from it. Without a Will, the State of Maryland will decide these issues.
Ms. Madden is careful to tailor the estate plan to the client’s individual needs. Some clients may not be comfortable going beyond routine tax planning. For others, more exotic techniques may be appropriate. Where significant wealth exists in an extended family, Ms. Madden can coordinate plans among the family members to reduce the overall tax bill. She is careful to explain the practical implications of the client’s decisions.
Ms. Madden counsels Personal Representatives and beneficiaries in estate administration. A Personal Representative is often a family member or close friend of the decedent. It can be difficult for them to deal simultaneously with grief and the unfamiliar requirements of probate. Ms. Madden will advise them of the duties of a PR and assist in the administration and distribution of the estate, including preparing the inventory and subsequent accountings.Practices
